If you’re craving a tranquil escape from your daily routine, Iejima, also known as IE Island, is your ultimate getaway. This enchanting island sits just off the coast of Motobu in Okinawa, and it’s perfect for day trips or weekend retreats. With its stunning beaches, rich history, and friendly local atmosphere, Iejima seamlessly blends relaxation and adventure.
Imagine yourself standing on the deck of a ferry as you head towards your island retreat. Taking your car aboard is an option, but many visitors enjoy exploring the island by bike, adding a bit of excitement to their trip.

Getting There
Reaching Iejima is simple, making it an excellent choice for spontaneous travelers. Ferries depart regularly from the Motobu Port, with an average journey time of around 30 minutes. To avoid missing your ride, it’s wise to check the timetable ahead of time.
Upon arrival, you’ll find ample amenities, including a grocery store, two Family Marts, and delicious local restaurants. For example, you might enjoy a delicious bowl of Okinawan soba or fresh sushi from a restaurant in town. And if you're craving a burger or taco rice, Ace Burger can't be beat!

Bask in the Island Sun at GI Beach
A highlight of Iejima is GI Beach. Its soft white sands and crystal-clear waters create the perfect environment for relaxing or swimming. The beach is also an excellent spot for camping! Enjoy free camping if you bring your tent. On a clear night, you can easily see the Milky Way and a multitude of constellations. It's the perfect opportunity to use a book like "National Geographic Stargazer's Atlas" or an app for stargazing.
Whether you want to relax with a book or take part in water activities like snorkeling or paddleboarding, GI Beach is fun for everyone. If you're lucky, you'll even see sea turtles when you visit the beach on Iejima.

Explore Nature and History
Beyond the beach are natural areas waiting to be explored. Iejima boasts several caves, including the impressive limestone formations where you can marvel at unique rock structures while taking in breathtaking views of the East China Sea.
For those who seek a challenge, hiking up Mt. Gusuku is a must. The hike, which takes about an hour, rewards you with stunning 360-degree views at the summit. Our favorite time to hike Mt. Gusuku is at sunset. Or try a sunrise hike while in the Land of the Rising Sun! No trip to Mt. Gusuku would be complete without a stroll through the shop - don't miss out on the locally produced goods.

A Walk Through History
Iejima is steeped in history, especially from its World War II past. The island is known as the site where famed war correspondent Ernie Pyle lost his life. To honor this significant figure, visitors can explore various memorials, each with its own story to tell.
One landmark worth visiting is "the pawn shop," one of the few surviving buildings from that era. When you stand before it, the visible scars left by bullets and bombs remind you of the island's heavy history. Walking through these sites allows you to reflect on the resilience and spirit of the community.

Accommodation Options
If you decide to extend your stay, Iejima offers a variety of accommodations to suit your needs. For example, consider checking into the vibrant YYY Resort, which features a refreshing pool perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure.
If you prefer a more homely atmosphere, various Airbnb accommodations dot the island, offering cozy locations to relax. No matter where you stay, you will experience the simplicity and comfort of island life.

Scenic Drives and Serene Farms
As you explore the island, whether by car or bike, you’ll be charmed by tranquil landscapes and fertile farmland. The slower pace of island life means you might not drive faster than 30 km/h, but that allows for scenic stops along the way. The first time we visited Iejima, we rented bikes and explored as far as our legs would take us! I can't recommend it enough if you only have time for a day trip. Even getting caught in a rain shower didn't dampen our moods during our first visit!
Feel free to stop and soak in the peaceful surroundings. Strolling through the farms and lush fields connects you with the island’s natural beauty and local culture. Be sure to head to the Waji for some of the best views on the island! And if you love flowers, the "Hibiscus Garden" has hundreds of varieties of hibiscus. You can even purchase one to take home.

It's Time for Island Hopping!
Iejima is not just a place to relax; it invites you to immerse yourself in its natural beauty and rich history. Whether you're camping on the beach, embarking on a hike, or diving into the turquoise waters, there’s an abundance of activities to fit every interest.
Don’t wait; start planning your unforgettable adventure on Iejima! If you need help navigating the ferry system or recommendations while on the island, reach out. But if you make your way out to Iejima and get lost exploring, you'll still have a fantastic time!
